How to Soften the lighting in your home
According to Chrissie Rucker (founder of The White Company), a lamp can add instant atmosphere to a room - and will make any space feel cosier and more intimate than a solitary overhead light source. Choose designs that work with your overall scheme and don’t feel you have to stick to one style. A tall sculptural floor lamp, such as our new Empire glass floor lamp can transform a dingy corner while a stylish hurricane lamp will add sparkle to a mantelpiece or table top.
Getting the lighting right for a special occasion is very important – it’s worth opting for a dimmer switch if you can as it will allow you to control the light perfectly (you should ask a trained electrician to do this for you). Think too, about highlighting certain elements of a room such as a picture or sculpture with an angled down-lighter to make them stand out.
You can also experiment with different wattage light bulbs. There is nothing worse than a room that is too bright and the more lamps you have the lower wattage you will need. (Chrissies recommends 60 watts as the maximum). For overhead bulbs, choose a great shade to soften the light and again install a dimmer switch if you can.
