A cluster of differently sized candles grouped on a mantelpiece or table top makes a great centrepiece; a pair of votive or container candles look sweet on a dressing table or window ledge: a row of identical columns lined up on a shelf is striking and modern.

If you are not using container candles, think of interesting and unusual homes for them - vintage glasses can be perfect for tea lights and a metal plate just the place for a simple pillar candle. Be inventive, a glass vase filled with dishwasher salt and a handful of white taper candles makes an inspired and eye-catching table-centre.
