Pillow Buying Guide

The normal life of a pillow is 2-4 years.

Once pillows start to go, they no longer provide the correct support for a good nights sleep. They can also become very unhygienic.

Here are few of the signs to look for:

• Is your pillow discoloured?

  We lose up to pint of sweat each night, which inevitably stains and dirties the cover and allows unhealthy bacteria to grow within the filling.

• Do you wake up with a neck ache?

  It may be because your pillow has become flat or lumpy and no longer support your neck in the way it should. It may also mean that you have the wrong pillow for your sleeping style.

• Do you wake up wheezy or with a runny or blocked nose?

  You may be allergic to house dust mites living in your pillows. New pillows are dust mite free.

It is also important to remember that pillows have a much more limited life span than duvets as the weight of our heads and the fact that some of use lie on top of a pillow flattens it. Therefore the level of support will deteriorate over the years.

Natural pillows will keep their shape and will offer the same level of support for longer that synthetic, but you should plump all pillows up daily. Once a week put your pillows in a tumble dryer for 15 minutes to kill dust mites and freshen and fluff your pillows.

Non-allergenic

There is a large choice of inherently non-allergenic synthetic fillings available on the market, though quality and so price can vary enormously.

Natural Feather & Down

These are widely regarded as the most luxurious and comfortable.

Air is trapped between the feathers/down so they mould to the shape of your head and neck. The firmness of the pillows is determined by the ratio of the firm feather to soft down used in the filling.

In down pillows, softness is further decided by the quality of the down, as different types of bird produce different sizes of down. The larger the down cluster, the softer and loftier the pillow will feel.

Premium Hollowfibre Pillow

These silky soft, fine and light Premium microfibre / hollowfibre pillows are the closest synthetic that is equivalent to a natural down. They are dust mite free thanks to a mite proof cover and they are also machine washable at 30 degrees so it's eco friendly.

Silk Pillow

To complement our luxurious duvets, we offer a silk blend pillow. As with the duvet the silk fibre gives the pillow a unique softness, whilst the polyester fibre core offers support for the head and neck and provides excellent recovery to prevent it from becoming too flat. As these fibres are naturally hypo-allergenic, they are an indulgent alternative to synthetics.

How soft or firm your pillows feel depends on what it is filled with. The softness or firmness of a natural pillow is dictated by the ratio of feather to down mix used in the fill; feather being firm, down being soft. The higher the quality of down, the softer and loftier the pillow will feel.

It's worth taking your time to find the correct type of pillow that will provide you with the correct balance of support and comfort, depending on your body shape, size, personal preference and most critically the position in which you sleep. Everyone is different and you and your partner may have different requirements. Sleeping on your back or tummy...

• You need one soft pillow (not too thick) that will mould gently to support your head
  and neck.

Sleeping on your side...

• You need a firmer pillow (or two pillows, depending on how broad your shoulders are) to keep your head supported and aligned with your spine. A great choice for a broad shouldered side-sleeper is a firm bottom pillow and a soft top pillow.
