I want to share with you a few of my fail-safe tips for a stress-free Christmas, so you can enjoy the festive season as well as making it a truly magical experience for those you're spending it with.
I used to leave everything until the last minute, wrapping presents and getting the house ready right up to Christmas Eve. By Christmas Day, I felt exhausted. Last year, I followed a very organized friend's example: gifts all wrapped by 31st November; house decorated by mid-December. I can't tell you the difference it made. Most importantly, I spent lots of time with the kids, enjoying the build-up to Christmas.
Shop children's ChristmasWe always have the family to stay Christmas Eve until Boxing Day and a full house. For us, that's our four children and two sets of grannies and grandpas. I put a mini Christmas tree in each bedroom, and the children decorate them with a Glitter Star Garland and little decorations, such as our Mercury Baubles. The stockings are laid out, ready to be opened.
Shop bedroomI always have our spicy and warming Winter fragrance in the hallway. I also love different scents in different rooms. This season, my favorites are Pine Cone, Fireside and fruity Cassis.
Shop fragranceOur Frosted Pinecone & Fir Garlands are brilliant, because they can go on a side table, up stairs, on a mantelpiece... they are so easy. Put them out and they are done. It still looks like you've made a big effort. I use them on mantelpieces and weave in fairy lights. And while I love fresh flowers, an easy alternative is to display one of our wreaths with a storm lantern. I love to put a bit of Christmas in every room, from filling bowls with baubles to setting the mood with scented candles.
Shop decorationsI prepare the table in advance, too. A white tablecloth is a must for me, and our Art Deco Mirrored Placemats always make an appearance. I arrange lots of candles – a mix of high, medium and low (our Unscented collection is perfect for this). It's lovely to have lots of twinkly light down the table. Our hand-finished Luxury Christmas Crackers add a festive finishing touch.
Shop tablewareRibbon makes a gift. A tougher, strong ribbon, such as our Gold Fabric Ribbon, is good to knot; if the ribbon is satiny and floppy, then a bow is gorgeous. I tie a little decoration, like the Decorative Eucalyptus Tie, over the knot, and tuck in a Gift Tag.
Shop wrap & cardsThe children make their grandparents' stockings, which is a nice tradition. On Christmas Day morning, we all get together to open our stockings. Inside, there's always a chocolate orange, a Satsuma, an accessory, such as a pair of Cozy Slippers, a Signature Candle and lovely toiletries from The White Company. I also add a jokey gift, like novelty socks or sparkly reindeer hairclips. And, for the grown-ups, I always include Alka-Seltzer.
