Simple pleasures: the first day on a new calendar

The first of January is a complex day. The start of the new year, of course. New beginnings, resolutions – perhaps even a pledge to stay free of resolutions. A muddy walk, neighbors wishing each other a ‘Happy New Year’. Optimism for the months ahead. But it can be a tired day, too. The end of Christmas, a last farewell to Quality Streets and mince pies. Maybe you were up until after midnight; maybe your head feels a little more delicate than usual. Then, like a beacon of clarity through a hangover, the new calendar lands. A fresh year, a clean page, waiting to be filled. Pen to paper. Vacations to plot out, meet-up promises to uphold, new plans and hobbies to explore. A whole 365 days of possibilities. We pin it up to the kitchen door or hang it on the fridge – testament to all that we’re going to achieve in the coming weeks. Looking forward, to the brighter days ahead.
