The soft squelching of mud under rain boots, the whip of cool, fresh air against your face, a big breath in as you reach the top of the hill and take in the view. It doesn’t have to be the nicest of days, although it helps if it’s dry – even better if you get that golden combination of sun on a winter’s day. Maybe it’s a route you’ve done a hundred times before. A sense of contentment to be found in the familiarity as you note the change in the seasons – browning leaves, emerging buds – since the last time you came this way. Or perhaps it’s somewhere completely new: a whole unexplored horizon to chase, surprises awaiting around every corner. Out all day or just for a few hours, it doesn’t matter, the very act of moving yourself is an invigorating boost and will make sinking into the couch later so much more rewarding.
