To create our beautifully designed and high-quality products with as little impact on people and the planet as possible.
Everything we make is designed with longevity in mind. From clothing to homeware we use the highest quality materials so pieces can be treasured for years to come. We are passionate about attention to detail, making sure to offer something truly unique in every item we create.
However, we know that our biggest impact on the environment comes from the ways we manufacture our products and the materials we make them from. We are taking action to reduce our impact on people and the planet as well as looking for more ways to transition conventional materials to more responsible and lower impact alternatives.
Materials matter
Where possible, we champion the use of natural materials due to their durability and high-quality. It is also important for us to support the global farming communities who grow these fibers. Cotton, linen and cashmere were three of our five most used materials in 2024.
However, we know that in the clothing industry, half of all greenhouse gas emissions happen during the raw material extraction and processing stages alone. So, to address these effects, we have started to move towards more responsible and lower impact alternatives.
In 2024, 30% of our collection contained lower impact and more responsible materials.
Plant-Based Materials
We are focusing on organic and regenerative agricultural practices that encourage enhanced soil health, responsible water management, biodiversity and good working conditions.
Manmade Cellulosic Fibres (MMCF)
Materials within the MMCF family include viscose, lyocell and modal. We are committed to using responsible alternatives which prevent the deforestation of ancient and endangered forests and ensure responsible chemical management.
Animal-Derived Materials
Improving animal welfare, the impact on land from overgrazing and the preservation of farmers and the local community, remain the key concerns when we are working with materials such as wool and cashmere in our collections.
Synthetic Fibers
We are focused on reducing our reliance on virgin synthetic yarns and using recycled materials where we can. We know this is not a perfect solution, so we are continuously looking for new ways to reduce their impact.
Third-party certified
We work with expert organisations to ensure our lower impact and more responsible materials are grown and produced to standards which address traceability, water, carbon, biodiversity and waste while also promoting animal welfare and good labor practices. Above all, the aim of these certifications is to support the environmental and social improvements needed to make real and meaningful change.
How we talk about our products
We never want to mislead you. That’s why we follow the CMA Green Claims Code when talking about the properties of our products. Any item must contain at least 50% of a more responsible or lower impact material for us to feature the claim on its label and we will always declare the percentage on the label.
We also participate in the Retailer Green Claims Forum hosted by the British Retail Consortium, which is a collaboration between retailers and sustainability leaders to address the issues and opportunities in delivering transparent communication around sustainability initiatives.
We review our product claims regularly to ensure they meet the principles set out in the CMA Green Claims Code.
Product Safety
Product safety will always be a priority at The White Company. We take great care to design and develop the best possible products working alongside our supplier partners to set out well-established controls. Our products are fully compliant with the most restrictive international chemical substances legislation, for our countries of sale, including the European REACH regulation and the General Product Safety Regulations.
Our Restricted Substances List (RSL) outlines the requirements our suppliers must meet to ensure our products and supply chain are free from any banned or restricted hazardous substances.
