Material matters

Different fabrics have different care requirements and individual care labels will give you the best instructions but, if in doubt…

Cotton

Known for its durability, cottons are best washed at 30°C, or 40°C. Iron while damp to easily remove any creases.

Linen

Use a gentle detergent and machine wash at 30°C, or 40°C. Store away from sunlight in a cool, dark space to maintain the integrity of the fabric.

Silk

Our silk bed linen can be machine washed at 30°C on a delicate setting. Iron while damp to minimise the effects of the iron’s heat and make sure the iron is cleaned beforehand.

Hemp

Machine washed at 40°C or 30°C and use a fabric conditioner to help soften. Make sure the machine isn’t too full, so bed linen can soak up water properly. Tumble dry at a low temperature as hemp tends to dry quicker than other fabrics.

How to keep your sheets white

• Regularly launder white sheets to help maintain brightness and freshness.

• Ensure your washing machine is totally clean. If your washing machine has a ‘Drum clean’ or ‘Tub clean’ setting, it is a cleaning cycle designed to remove detergent residue and build up.

• Wash similar colours together to avoid any colour transfers. Avoid fabric softeners, as they can dull the finish.

• Some sheets will allow the use of non-chlorine bleach only and others no bleach at all, depending on the finishing process, type of fibre and colour. It’s usually better to avoid chlorine bleaches, as these can have a chemical reaction to protein stains and turn them more yellow. Check individual care labels for guidance.

• Treat stains quickly. This will increase your chances of removing them, rather than letting them settle into the fibres.

• Do not overload your washing machine – this can prevent it from cleaning whites properly, as items cannot move as freely around the drum to remove dirt.

If there’s one thing we know, it’s that white bed linen just works. Simple and soothing the neutral provides a sense of calm in any scheme.
