Life happens on the sofa
We love how open-floor plans have taken the place of self-defined rooms and our living rooms serve more functions than ever. Here, you watch an entire series in one go, feet up, throw over your lap. You take a catnap on a Sunday afternoon after a long dog walk. You make a cushion fort with your little ones. You gather friends for cheese and wine after dinner… you live. It makes sense, then, to make your sofa a place you’ll love to spend your time.
Your sofa is the piece that anchors the rest of the room. Important, then, to choose wisely. Our sofas are made to order in the UK, so you can choose the ideal style, size, fabric, colour and legs that are just right for you and your space. We favour the keep-forever kind of styles that blend function and comfort and natural materials that soften their simplicity.
Shopping tip
Take some time to mark out the sofa’s size, shape, and position to get a feel for how it will look in the room – it’s easy to do with a tape measure and making tape. Walk around it, imagine putting your feet up, think what you’d like your view of the room to be.
Placement tip
Your space might decide for you that your sofa needs to skirt the wall, or if you have more to play with, you might want to use it as a partition to create mini-spaces within the larger room – for instance, a cluster of seating in the centre of the space can create cosiness in bigger areas.
Mixing tones
If you know us well, you’ll know there’s nothing about a neutral living room we find boring. There are ways to add colour (we like ours tonal) and depth, so the room will always feel fresh. A rich array of light or deep wood, pale upholstery, and a handful of high-contrast accessories can leave a modern impression on a pared-back palette.
Illuminating spaces
We all look better in the right light, and that goes for living rooms, too. A well-placed table, standing lamp or ceiling pendant can create pools of light that invite you to dip in. As well as traditional lighting, we have a range of portable lamps to create a glow wherever you like, even where there are no plugs.
Corner styling
We like to make the most of every inch of a room by turning empty corners into cosy seating areas. Picture a soft-to-touch textured chair and a compact stool, big enough to rest a cup of tea and your to-be-read book pile.
Adding texture
Slubby, furry, woven or waffled: when it comes to creating a relaxing space you just want to sink into, more is more. A simple sofa suddenly becomes that much more inviting with a cashmere throw and a few chunky, tactile cushions. And to rest your feet, why not pull up a boucle pouffe?
