An ode to the reading nook
Carving out time for relaxing rituals among the chaos of daily life is something we know the value of – moments of quiet, undistracted solace. A cosy corner is just the spot for making the most of them.
Just the name ‘nook’ conjures a feeling of cosiness. A promise of uninterrupted time to bury yourself in a new novel; enjoy a quiet morning coffee, while leafing through the Sunday papers; to take a mental break from the day. That's the beauty of a nook, it can act as your dedicated hide-away – however you like to unwind. With a few additions, any bare alcove, corner or crevice has the potential to become a favourite snug space in your home and, in our opinion, you can never have too many of those.
An inviting glow
Lighting can make all the difference to your nook's feel and function. Pendant lights, floor lamps and table lamps can all provide gentle, focused light for reading or crafting. If you’re space lacks power sockets, or you want a wire-less look, our portable lamps offer ambient light wherever you need it. For extra-cosy ambience, we like to keep a candle close by on a shelf or side table.
An abundance of texture
Furry layers, cloud-like comfort, neutral shades – there’s nothing that encourages you to curl up like homely textured fabrics. For a little luxury, cashmere throws or faux fur cushions and blankets feel almost too good to stir from. Our faux fur is recycled, too, made from post-consumer polyamides and polyesters, such as PET bottles.
A place to perch
It might be a soft sheepskin chair in your living space or on your landing, along with a compact stool to rest a mug of tea on as you turn the pages of a paperback. Perhaps using a window seat, padded with faux fur cushions and throws, so you can take in the view with your morning coffee. Or an armchair in the corner of the bedroom, with a cashmere throw your lap, for late-night reading.
Size-up to a snug
The larger, enclosed iteration of the nook, if you have a whole spare room to play with, why not create a snug? They can have the same cosy feel as a nook – it just takes the right furniture placement. For example, a close cluster of seating in a space can create cosiness, even in bigger areas. Gather them by a fire or coffee table. Look to accessories that will add comfort, such as ample cushions, pouffes to rest your feet and plenty of lighting, including lamps, to create pools of atmosphere.
