In the making: hand-embroidered bed linen
Discover the story behind the exquisite embroidery technique that’s featured on some of our bed-linen collections, and how it supports communities in Vietnam.
Daytime details
The amount of time, attention to detail and care that goes into this delicate thread work is what makes our Santorini, Allegra, Adeline and Amara ranges so special. The ladder-stitch technique is known as ‘jour’, possibly because the hand-stitching is carried out during daylight hours, creating an array of unique patterns that can’t be replicated at such an intricate level by sewing machines.
Heritage skills
Vietnam prides itself on having a rich history of traditional handicrafts. Within a small group of villages near Hanoi, otherwise known as ‘the golden villages’, women work together in homes or small workshops to create this exquisite embroidery for us. Honing this skill is a legacy that’s been passed down through families and communities for over 100 years. It’s also a vital industry for women who are located in more rural areas, enabling them to earn an income working in, or near, their own homes.
