Protecting our planet

OUR PROMISE

To decarbonise our operations and supply chains, while protecting and conserving nature, and contributing towards a more circular economy.

Creating a better future begins with the choices we make today. We take great care to create timeless pieces that can be used and loved for years, while acknowledging our responsibility to operate with as little impact as possible to protect the planet for future generations to come.

We know that nature plays a key role in the fight against global warming and the impacts of climate change. That’s why our priorities are focused on decarbonising our operations and supply chain, safeguarding nature and biodiversity, minimising waste and pollution, and transitioning our products and packaging towards a more circular economy.

Lowering emissions

As members of the British Retail Consortium, we are signed up to the Climate Action Roadmap, a commitment from across the retail industry to reach net zero by 2040. We are accelerating our decarbonisation initiatives to meet the aims of the UK Climate Change Act 2008 and international Paris Agreement, to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

To monitor our progress, we use an environmental-management system, Achilles, to measure our carbon emissions across three scopes. We have fully mapped scopes 1 and 2 and are in the process of mapping scope 3.

Scope 1, 2 and 3 explained

Scope 1

Direct emissions from owned or operated assets. As we don’t own our own fleet of vehicles, and the use of natural gas is contained to a small number of stores, these emissions remain small.

Scope 2

Direct and indirect emissions from energy used to power our buildings. We use renewable energy and have implemented efficiency measures such as LED lighting and sensors in our stores, offices, and warehouses.

Scope 3

All indirect emissions in our supply chain. We are paying special attention to decarbonisation initiatives, such as moving to lower impact materials and manufacturing processes and using lower carbon transportation.

Protecting and conserving nature

Throughout our operations and supply chain, we are committed to protecting, conserving and restoring nature, from forests and farmlands to fresh water and oceans. This means continually improving our use of natural resources by transitioning to more responsible practices and management systems that will help protect our ecosystems.

Tools, such as the WWF Biodiversity and Water Risk Filter, as well as the Hot Button Report by Canopy Plane support our risk assessment, are guiding and informing our decisions, while also assisting the responsible use and management of resources.

A more circular future

Our approach to circularity is a part of how we’ve done things for the last 30 years. As we look to the future, we are working to find solutions that will help us close the loop and contribute to a more circular economy, reducing our dependence on finite resources, enabling our items to be kept in circulation for as long as possible and ensuring our pre-loved pieces can be made into new products at the end of their life.

Designing for circularity

We are proud to design timeless products, championing renewable fibres and high-quality standards that support an extended life. A key aim is to work towards circular design principles to ensure our products can easily re-enter the economy during and after their use.

We prioritise using only one material where possible, making them more suitable to be transformed into new materials at the end of their life. We are looking to increase the use of recycled materials, while continuing to prioritise quality and durability, and the ability to reuse and recycle.

Keeping products in circulation

Our specialist care guides help you look after your pieces, so you can enjoy them for longer, as we recognise caring for products is vital to keep them looking and feeling like new.

Resale, rental and repairs also play a key role in keeping items in circulation for as long as possible. Since 2021, we’ve partnered with Thrift+, a pre-loved shopping and resell platform with a mission to end fashion waste.

We’re also proud to partner with the British Heart Foundation, supporting their vital work through donations of our pre-loved furniture. Currently this solution only covers our end-of-line and ex-display items, but we are working to establish an easy solution that customers can also utilise.

Transforming our cherished and pre-loved products

Our ultimate aim will always be to enable true product-to-product circularity. As technology and infrastructure continues to advance, we have established partnerships with organisations that are helping us recycle our products at the end of their life, to reduce waste and keep valuable products out of landfill.

Since 2005, we have partnered with Newlife, a charity changing the lives of disabled and terminally ill children across the UK, donating end-of-line stock which can be resold, as well as recycling items at the end of their life.

We also offer an in-store takeback service for electrical items at the end of their life. Through our partnership with First Mile, these electrical items are recycled with the raw materials ready to be made into new products. For more information, see our WEEE policy.

Improving our packaging

The white bag. The black bow. The gift boxes. The way we package and present our products is part of the whole experience. But we recognise the impact of packaging, from the use of raw materials to waste and pollution, so we take great care to ensure our packaging is fit for purpose and that it can be reused or recycled.

Gift boxes and bags

Currently, our paper-based packaging items, including our store bags, e-commerce and gift boxes, are sourced from controlled and responsibly managed wood sources, and contain a minimum of 30% recycled materials. Similarly, our e-commerce and polybags contain a minimum of 30% recycled materials.

We know we have more to do, though. We are undertaking a review to make our packaging even better, aligning with new regulations in the countries we sell in. This means reducing our dependence on virgin materials and instead, increasing the volume of recycled and innovative materials. Most importantly, we want to get to the point where every component can easily be recycled at home and turned into new high-quality material.
