GET THE LOOK: WHITE SUMMER BEDROOM

Achieve a serene and stylish sleep space using our favourite neutral hue with tips from the stylist who helped shape these looks, Elkie Brown.

“With warm balmy days and nights ahead, the sanctuary of a calm, cool bedroom and the promise of a good night’s sleep, or a relaxing afternoon siesta, can make the heat more manageable. A crisp white linen sheet that softens and soothes against the skin is, for me, the feeling that encapsulates Summertime.”

Ways with white

“As we continue to embrace the staycation, why not create that beautiful boutique-hotel bedroom you’ve been dreaming of at home, instead? This style is my dream Summer set-up, with a beautifully dressed bed of soft-white, natural layers and crisp textures, contrasting against the wood, jute and rattan elements which continue to be so popular.”

1. Fabric first

“For me, 100% linen is my Summer bedding go-to. It is like a great linen dress! I absolutely love the classic Santorini Linen, with its simple ladder-stich detail. It is timeless sophistication and a true investment piece that keeps you cool in Summer and warm in Winter. I often think the fitted sheet can be a bit of an afterthought and, to be honest, it is not as exciting as picking the other bed-linen items, but getting the right fitted sheet makes all the difference – and this I have only discovered recently. I would pair the Santorini with the new Faro fitted sheet, sustainably grown, temperature regulating and so soft on the skin, I think it complements the linen perfectly.”

2. Keep layers light

“Layering is not just for Winter-bed dressing, and I think it can make more of a difference to a good Summer night’s sleep. With the temperature changing throughout the night, you need the right layers to get you through. I like to layer the bed with a couple of different-weighted throws: a lovely super-light one, such as the Miles Bedspread, that is just a little extra warmth over the sheet, then a heavier one. I love the Tinos Throw, which can be pulled up when the temperature drops around 1am. They also look beautiful layered together, with the contrasting white textures and the pretty subtle blue stripe. This combination is how you can really use white to create a beautifully dressed bed.”

3. Elevate with cushions

“You honestly can never have too many! It’s another way of layering in textures of white and creating that soft, cloud-like bed you just want to jump into. I like to use different scales of cushions, building from the back, forward. 65x65cm cushions are a great way to create height and ground the bed, and especially if you do not have a headboard, this is a good visual trick. Depending on your bed size, three across the back can make a huge statement. I like to layer the standard pillows in front of those, then finish off with a mixture of smaller complementing cushions.”

4. Contrast with texture

“Jute and rattan epitomise the Summer look this season and are the perfect contrast to show off all the gorgeous white linen. I love to use a textured rug to frame an area within a room. Rugs in bedrooms with wooden, or hard floors, help soften the look and feel wonderful under bare feet. Benches and stools are incredibly versatile pieces, adding them at the end of the bed is a great way to bring an interesting focal point to a bedroom, especially if you are tight on space. I simply place a large wooden, or stone, bowl as a visual statement on top, alongside a pile of must-read books and a spare throw. The Faro Stool also makes a great bedside and side table – just lay a lacquer tray to create a harder surface area for placing a carafe and glass.”

5. Vary lighting

“Create the perfect ambience for bedrooms, as I have here, by using a mixture of ceiling and table lamps. This seagrass lamp with a warm bulb creates the perfect diffused bedside light. Using table lights, which I often refer to as ‘lower-level lighting’ – and is how I will often light an entire room – is a great way of creating that cosy feel for when the light outside fades. Create this by placing a few around the room, especially in those darker corners.

“Not forgetting all important candlelight, that warm glow of a candle can transform the space into the serene sanctuary you deserve. I would add a soothing scented candle, such as Spa Retreat or Calm, and maybe dot a few floor lanterns to finish off the look.”

Elkie’s Summer picks

“This is such a pretty nightie and 100% cotton feels so great against your skin on those warm nights. Plus, with it being sleeveless and the shorter length, it means you can really experience those gorgeous Summer bed-linen layers, too. It also comes in a matching robe for lazy-morning coffees in the garden.”

“This pouffe is very versatile and works in so many spaces around the home and even be taken outside for additional seating. I think they look great in pairs, around a coffee table, or a couple at the bottom of the bed. Jute complements so many different neutral interior schemes and brings a warmth sometimes missing in a very white interior.”

“Not just for dining, this beautiful artisan shape can be utilised in different ways. Try it as a statement piece on a sideboard with a plant, or dried flowers, inside, while placed on bench at the end of the bed is the perfect spot to group smaller items.”

“This is just the perfect large basket. I use a similar-size one in my bedroom to pile in all my cushions before going to bed. It keeps them tidy, clean and off the floor! When it is not being used in the day, it is great for carrying cushions and throws to the garden. Just like cushions, I think you can never have too many baskets!"

“These are super-soft and lightweight cotton towels, made in Turkey. A total refresh for the bathroom and a great way to help create that at-home-spa feeling. They will look gorgeous folded and piled up. Don’t forget your Spa Escape candle, waffle towelling slippers and robe – home spa perfection!”

“I do love a ruffle, or frill! I'll mix it with my smarter Santorini linen to create an alternative feminine look. Layering in a couple of square pillowcases and a flat sheet is an easy addition. It is such an incredibly soft linen-hemp blend, and with hemp being one of the most sustainable plants, to me, it's definitely worth investing in.”
