Get the look with Unique Homestays
To celebrate 1 year of The Club and Unique Homestays' 25th birthday, we've partnered to reimagine the interiors of Ukiyo, one of their most inspiring coastal retreats perched on the Cornish coast. Take a look inside to see how we've brought the interiors to life and discover the owner Simon’s inspiration behind the space. Plus, be in with the chance of winning a stay – find out how below.
What’s the most important thing when designing a homestay?
To me, a homestay should feel comfortable, welcoming and lived in, but with a few added touches that make it feel special, while still giving guests the freedom to make it their own for a few days.
How do you create a place that feels welcoming and reminiscent of a real home?
The details matter. You want guests to feel immediately at ease, so comfort is always the starting point. I like combining tactile soft furnishings, carefully chosen furniture, and good lighting with interesting details that people may not have in their own homes, such as a few standout features – a statement bath, walk-in shower or hot tub. These elements add a touch of luxury and make a stay feel truly memorable.
Tell us about the design philosophy behind Ukiyo. How would you like guests to feel when they stay there?
The most important thing was creating somewhere that felt different from anywhere else – contemporary but not overly polished. I think the combination of contemporary design and clean architectural lines and vintage furniture helps achieve that.
We want guests to feel completely at ease, relaxed and looked after, with everything they need close at hand. If they don't want to leave the house, then we know we've done our job – and many guests tell us exactly that.
Home or homestay, what are the fundamentals of a well-designed space?
Comfort is key, but so is personality. The space should feel effortless, generous without being too empty and punctuated with pieces that feel considered, luxurious and a little different from the everyday.
Style or practicality? Which is more important?
It has to be a balance of both. Some pieces need to prioritise practicality, while others can be chosen purely for their aesthetic appeal. A sofa, for example, should always be comfortable, whereas a coffee table can make more of a visual statement.
What is the one overlooked design feature that you think more people should pay attention to?
Natural light and good lighting. The more natural light a property receives, the better it tends to feel. In darker spaces, or after nightfall, thoughtful lighting can completely elevate a space, while poor lighting can have the opposite effect. I made sure to blend warm ambient lighting with task lighting to illuminate specific areas such as kitchen islands and reading nooks.
How do you create interest while staying within a neutral scheme?
Layering and pattern are key. At Ukiyo, we've worked with a largely neutral palette, but we've introduced depth through incorporating different shades, textures and patterns. These subtle contrasts catch the eye and create interest without overwhelming the space.
Wherever you are, a comfortable bed is key to a good night's sleep. What are the fundamentals for you when creating a restful space?
Comfortable pillows, low-level lighting and scent. Something as simple as a familiar candle or reed diffuser can help create a sense of calm and make a space feel instantly welcoming.
What makes the perfect guest bathroom?
I love a spacious walk-in shower or a statement bath. Add plush towels, robes and a clean, aromatic scent and you've created a space that feels both practical and indulgent.
If you were going to make one tweak to your own space to make it feel more like a holiday stay, what would it be and why?
I'd add a two-seater sofa or love seat to the main bedroom – a place to relax after a bath and make the most of the view across the sea. Holiday homes remind us how important it is to slow down, and having a dedicated spot to pause, read or simply enjoy the view makes all the difference.
